Donating computer cycles to science!
Do you use 100% of your computer all the time? If you're like most people, the answer is probably not. Why not donate your computer's time to science?
The World Community Grid is an non-profit organization that uses grid computing to work on scientific/health research. Current projects include:
* Fight AIDS@Home
* Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2
* Help Defeat Cancer
* Fiocruz Genome Comparison
* Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy
Completed projects include:
* Human Proteome Folding - Phase 1
* Smallpox Research
How grid computing works: Grid computing brings thousands of personal computers together to work on small pieces of a larger project. Together, these smaller computers have the power of a huge supercomputer, but without the multi-million dollar price tag.
What you do: Once you sign up and install an agent on your computer (United Devices for general users, BOINC for advanced users), the agent will download a work unit and work on it in the background while your computer is on. Once it has finished, the result will be uploaded back to the server and validated. The agent won't slow down your computer and you won't even know it's there!*
Why you should do this:
* This is a great way to donate to a good cause.
* It costs you nothing.
* Help find treatments and possibly cures for deadly diseases.
* It's safe and reliable. Currently, 289 corporations, government agencies, schools and non-profit organizations all over the world donate their extra computer power to this cause, including IBM, who runs the servers for the project.
* Let the world know that Code Lyoko fans are humanitarians.
* You don't need a super-powered computer to do this, but you can brag about it if you do.
* Why not?
