Avatar: The Last Airbender

I have to admit, after Code Lyoko, Avatar is my favorite Cartoon Show. I love the intricacies of the plot and the all the references to Japanese Culture. Not to mention, I like how Katara is a bit like Yumi in the kick-butt, Girl Power way. But does anyone know how their gang came together in the first place? I'm not exactly clear on that.
