La bande-dessinée

We ‘ve talken about bande-dessinées (BD) in several topics. This discussion should continue in a dedicated one.

This is a page on wikipedia-Fr about the franco-belgian BD :

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bande_dess ... anco-belge

It is partially translated in english here :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bande_Dessin%C3%A9e

We also talked few times ago about the annual international BD festival in Angoulême, the city where Antefilm is located.

I don't know exactly what that says about French kids versus American kids as to their attitude toward their literature, but it must mean something....

Indeed, A4 format paper, hard-cover, very often coloured pictures is the standard franco-belgian BD format.

Very interesting, Pete. Thanks!

The map is enjoyable. French place-names always sound so cool. I noticed a place SW of Angoulême which translates as "the bird store" -- how strange!

Anyhoo, I'd sure like to be able to drive my ancient Volvo coupe to the BD Festival and see what goes on....

I got lazy and just read the English version of the Wikipedia article. Interesting about the ideological involvement of BD during and after the Nazi occupation. In the English article, there is only a mention of Roger Leloup's name (drat!) so later I am going to look him (and Yoko) up specifically, as I ought to learn more about my idols.Image
